St. Ives is home to a somewhat surprising collection of art galleries, of which the Tate Gallery is without doubt the most important exhibition space of its kind, displaying works by many renowned and famous artists.

With views across the nearby Porthmeor Beach, the Tate Gallery St. Ives is a relatively recent addition to the town, arriving in the early 1990s. Housed in a striking whitewashed building, which has become an important landmark in its own right, the Tate Gallery St. Ives offers five spacious, well-lit galleries, displaying many wonderful contemporary paintings, sculptures and stylish ceramics from the 20th century. Guided tours, activity packs, a cafe serving basic refreshments and a gift shop add an extra level of interest.

The popular Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden celebrates the life and work of the late 20th-century artist, Dame Barbara Hepworth, who lived much of her life in the St. Ives area. Operated by none other than the Tate Gallery, the Barbara Hepworth Museum is known for its abstract and often organic art works and sculptures, many of which are displayed in a beautiful garden setting, where numerous subtropical plants flourish. The museum is housed within her actual studio, which opened its doors to members of the public in the mid-1970s.
